Little Bets

Little Bets

“Little Bets” is an interesting book written by Peter Sims. He explains how many breakthrough ideas have emerged from small discoveries. So, basically it is a historical book which gives some examples of these discoveries. The part that is not really clear about this book is how we are to cause these small discoveries to happen in the first place. He gives some examples of new forms of working as in Google where the workers are involved in many areas but there is not a clear concept.

The concept of innovation has been debated for a long time, especially the ways to achieve innovation. According to Adam Smith innovation comes mainly from specialization. So according to this view, in any company the more people specialize in simple operations of the production process the greater is the possibility that they will bring innovation. Nowadays this idea has changed. Workers should move also to other working areas in order to take and give new insights in areas not very familiar to them.

Personally, I am totally against specialization. I believe that the capitalist class is the one class that favours this specialization. By specializing in simple operations we become like robots that think only about specific tasks and lose track of the main picture. However, we should question the system itself and not take for granted that we have the best system and consequently try to make it work smoothly.

  2. I mean if some trend benefits the system(like specialization) it most probably harms the individual and vice-versa. But generations have to live with it. if the lifespan of a human being is 70-80 years, the life of the system is hundreds of years. It had much more time to get sophisticated than individuals do.
