Rush

Rush

“Rush: Why You Need and Love the Rat Race” is a wonderful book by Todd Buchholz. One can say anything about this book but not that it lets you indifferent. It talks about a really debatable concept. I, myself, have two points of view about this issue.

First, I think that human beings need to compete. We base our self-esteem, our self-confidence, even our happiness on comparison with others. Each of us is considered reach, poor, lucky, or healthy when in comparison with others. We even compare such insignificant things such as the number of friends on facebook. J Even more, when we are really busy we feel the adrenaline going through our body; we are more active, more determined. Of course, even the vacations after a stressful period seem more peaceful than after a quiet period.

However, I also think that competing may have bad effects. Continuous competition tends to remind us that time is going fast, that our life is ending, that death is approaching. This may have great repercussions in our life. We may feel empty, unsatisfied, and unhappy.

On the other, when there is no stress and no pressure we feel like each day everything is the same. This makes us feel secure, we feel like the time is not passing at all, we will be forever in the same conditions as we are now; death is never going to come. This makes us happy, satisfied with our lives.

I cannot determine myself what type I am. Generally I like to compete. It is pretty much entertaining. But I have also had some periods in my life when I wanted to escape to some secluded beach or mountain and remain there until the end of time.

To conclude, the book talks about a very debatable issue. Understanding the book gives us great insights about the world, about the people, and even more importantly about ourselves.

  2. I also believe we need competition , and race to show the best quality we have. May be we have some hidden talents, and living a quite life, in village doesn't permit to develop them and to have the best of your self. In the mean time, i remember the discussion in our class, about time paradox, and Professor asked why people in New York are slim, elegant...and most answered because of competition. So it leads to development, and to a constructive path of life. Regarding to the days without pressure, that are the same to each other ,i believe that are so annoying that is hard to support. Not because of the lack of challenge but because of the lack of true life, what one really needs to live.
Lastly, i agree with you about the book , ...it is like you describe i... you cant stay indifferent of it.
