Little Bets, is a book written by Peter Sims. What make it noticeable among others are the stories and characters that Sims uses to illustrate the main ideas. They are really interesting and they make the book more enjoyable. He takes examples like, Chris Rock who tests new jokes in small scenes with small audiences before taking them to bigger events. In this way, he tests and refines jokes that he knows will resonate with audiences at bigger events. There are many other stories in the book, like Pixar’s Toy Story, Google’s etc.
Sims addresses perfectionism, and shows that “our creative capacities won’t be liberated unless we let go of the subconscious need to always be perfect or have the immediate answer”. Making little bets is about doing little tests. Try something. Get feedback. Refine. Get more feedback. The creative process is a hands-on experiment. Most successful entrepreneurs don’t begin with brilliant ideas, they discover them.
The book is useful in a personal level also at it hepls to realize that making “little bets” – trying new things, making small investments in good, original ideas with the understanding that they may fail or develop into different ideas altogether – is a positive, healthy, and innovative path to take as individuals and as members of a forward-thinking organization.
I do agree that people should do some calculation before but not necessary to calculate in details. According to me people who do much calculation are not the right people to start an enterprise.
