Born Entrepreneurs, Born Leaders

Scott Shane, a professor of entrepreneurial studies at Case Western Reserve University, in "Born Entrepreneurs, Born Leaders" writes down that he found out in a study directed by him that entrepreneurial tendencies are heavily influenced by genetic factors.. According to him scientists recognize that what you do at work is influenced by your genes. They go as far as claiming that even to be a religious person is caused by genes. Most writers don’t look carefully at genetic effects on work-related behavior because they start with the assumption that we are all born as untreated minerals. Whatever happens to us, and whatever work-related behaviors we develop, they claim, is a function of the choices we make. Free will and self-made behavior are the dominant philosophical concepts underpinning business writing, and no one wants to spend much time on things that don’t fit neatly into this philosophy. I was really fascinated by the idea of using genetics in order to assign people into the fields they may become more experts or using it in order to predict the behavior of employees in certain situations. I believe that this is the most important implication of this evidence as companies would benefit from selecting genetically proper people engage in the workplace behaviors that the company seeks, be that entrepreneurship, decision making, leadership, or anything else. Other companies may be interested in people that have such a gene construct that is predisposed to become e good team player and in this way by using some personality tests of the genes they would easily find what they look for. Apart from the side of companies the idea of examining and knowing about genetic information would be very useful in knowing more about yourself which consequently would help you make better choices about university choices, occupation, family etc. Understanding how your innate predispositions affect your work preferences might give you insight into why you are more interested in the arts than you are in business. That information might give you the courage to even explain to your spouse or your parents why you want to change your career because you find your job unsatisfying. However all this has its ethical implications and may not even be viable in the future but it still remains a thrilling idea for the revolutionizing of the science of HRM.
