BORROWING BRILLIANCE

BORROWING BRILLIANCE: The Six Steps to Business Innovation by Building on the Ideas of Others" is a book written by David Kord Murray.
In this book he explains that new ideas are always constructed over the existing ideas. Existing ideas combined together brings to new ideas never combined before in that way. He has defined and explained this combination and transformation through six steps. Bill Gates "borrowed brilliance" to create Microsoft, Steve Jobs "borrowed" to create the Mac, and before Isaac Newton used similar thinking techniques to arrive at his theory of gravity.

I liked very much these quotations:
The secret to creativity is knowing how to hide your sources. – Einstein.
Make everything as simple as possible, but not simpler.  – Einstein.
The best way to have a good idea is to have lots of ideas.  - Linus Pauling.
Genius borrows nobly.  - Ralph Waldo Emerson.
He explains Borrowing Brilliance through 6 steps:
Step One: Defining: Define the problem you're trying to solve.
Step Two: Borrowing: Borrow ideas from places with a similar problem.
Step Three: Combining: Connect and combine these borrowed ideas.
Step Four: Incubating: Allow the combinations to incubate into a solution.
Step Five: Judging: Identify the strength and weakness of the solution.
Step Six: Enhancing: Eliminate the weak points while enhancing the strong ones.
To explain better I will give you my short example of Borrowing the ideas of QR (QR is short for Quick Response and they can be read quickly by a cell phone). I have borrowed the idea of creating my own QR and combined it for our blog and the one you see on the left is the quick link to access our NEWTRENDS2011 blog. Every one of you who has an Iphone or Android Phone can install an application called BarCode scanner and can read QR easily and perfectly faster than typing.

  1. Hi Elvis,
I liked the idea of the book, because it somehow makes more tangible "creativity". Everyone of us can be creative in a simple way, just by using other ideas and combining them in the proper way. And yours, is a nice example.

  2. It is a very interesting idea which focused all of us to gather the ideas around us. Sometimes we think that for being very successful we should create our own idea. But following the instruction that the book gives to understand was that we are free to catch the idea of the others and make them ours.
